Can a father forgive his son’s murderer?

When Boy was fifteen years old, his father, businessman Dundun Ecury from Aruba, sent him to boarding school in The Netherlands. When the war breaks out, he joins the resistance. Just before the liberation, he is executed by the Germans. Ten years later Dundun Ecury arrives in the post-war Netherlands to search for the body of his son. He has only one thing to go on; Boy died with a smile on his face. Dundun’s search leads to a confrontation with Ewoud, the suspected murderer of his son. He realizes, to his annoyance, that he starts to project the care and love for Boy onto Ewoud. Then Ewoud makes a painful revelation.

Two movies with a female lead: Drie Vrouwen and Sinceramente Candy.

Sinceramente Candy by Chantal Anthonia| 26 minutes| Spanish spoken with English subtitles
Now that large groups of Venezuelans are plunged into poverty by the policies of President Maduro, an almost invisible humanitarian disaster is unfolding in Curaçao. Refugees from Venezuela leave home and hearth behind, only to fall into the hands of criminals after a dangerous journey across the sea. Filmmaker Chantal Anthonia conducted intensive research into the situation and depicted island life through the eyes of Candy, a young Venezuelan who moves to Curaçao for a better life. An uncomfortable story that the viewer will not soon let go.

Drie Vrouwen over Slavernij en Vrijheid by Ida Does| 50 minutes | Dutch & English subtitles

Landhuis Bloemhof is launching Hòfi Cinema, a monthly film night to encourage local and other Caribbean filmmakers to show their movies. In the first edition we have the documentary Welterusten Papa by Sharelly Emanuelson and two shorts: Sin Ayó by Elizabeth Francisco and Tahit by the young filmmaker Rovendly Welvaart. Tickets available at Bloemhof

Main film: Welterusten Papa by Sharelly Emanuelson
Different father-daughter stories are portrayed where we experience the dynamics, influences within the relationship, and the love they have for each other. The film shows us an alternative narrative about the presence of fathers in the lives of their daughters. As a result, stereotypes about masculinity and fatherhood are challenged.
