Popular Traditions
Author:
El Museo del Barrio

Summary:

The Permanent Collection of El Museo del Barrio includes a large number of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Puerto Rican santos de palo or “wooden saints”. An important folk tradition, these carvings in wood are images representing saints, holy figures and legends of popular Catholicism. The devotion to santos and the art of carving them was introduced to the Caribbean and to large areas of South, Central, and North America, as well as the Philippines, by Spanish colonists.

El Museo del Barrio’s Permanent Collection of Puerto Rican santos is one of the country’s finest. Most of these santos were created by the traditional carvers -the santeros- of rural, pre-industrial Puerto Rico between roughly 1850 and 1940. Many of the folk artist remain anonymous (few of the santos are signed) yet their creation continue to speak eloquently about the men and woman, who under conditions of extreme material deprivation, were able to make unique spiritual and artistic statements.

The word santero (not to be confused with the santeros, or priests, of Orisha worship, a religion of African-Yoruban roots) simply means “saint maker”. These traditional makers of santos de palo shared the same beliefs held in the communities where they lived and worked. The santeros found their inspiration more in their religious faith rather than desire for personal recognition or income, which usually came from other resources. Information about individual santeros was handed down as oral history, just as the art of carving santos was passed down through families and communities.

Among these santeros are talented artists. Though many tend to imitate their early predecessors, there are other who dare to depart from traditions with new images and styles. These younger generations of santeros is largely responsible for bringing new vitality to this art of form.

Rafael Montañez Ortiz: Years of the Warrior 1960 - Years of the Psyche 1988
Author:
El Museo del Barrio

Summary:

The startling work of Rafael Montañez Ortiz (Ralph Ortiz) demands a response from the viewer. It questions the traditional definitions of art, and encourages argumentation. In fact, from the onset of his artistic career, Ortiz has frequently performed in public, eliciting and incorporating audience participation even when it involved vigorous dissent. In the galleries, the viewer is confronted with the Archaeological Finds in which furniture –often his own, often furniture donated by friends, always in perfect condition- is destroyed by Ortiz. One can also find the remains, and listen to a recording of a Piano Concert that the artists has performed with a hatched in hand. Colorful and festive feather constructions on the floor and walls compel the viewer to imagine rituals of ancient cultures, while the use of audiovisual equipment and electronic media brings the viewer face to face with newly found venues for artistic endeavor.

Growing Beyond: Woman Artists from Puerto Rico
Author:
Museum of Latin Art of Latin America & El Museo del Barrio

Summary:

On March 6, 1983, a group of 25 artists in Puerto Rico, united by their common ties, joined forces to create the “Asociación de Mujeres Artistas de Puerto Rico” , at a gathering of woman artists’ exhibition held on Women’s week at Plaza de Las Américas.

They can now sit down and reflect on their accomplishments. They have been bittersweet years. Years of growth, of a newly developed awareness and of a reassertion of themselves as both individuals and artist. Each of them at their own level of artistic endeavor, joined together, writing their own history, aware of the spare documentation of women’s contribution to the arts. The 40 women who now comprise it have made history in the field of Plastic Arts in Puerto Rico. At the same time, through their individual and collective successes, they have succeeded in carving a place for themselves outside the island- in Europe, Latin America and throughout the United States. While they share similar interest and professional ambition, the artists who make up the “Asociación de Mujeres de Puerto Rico”, are distinct in many ways. Some are just beginning their careers, others are established professionals, some are sculptors, some graphic artist, others painters.

It is the diversity of experience and talent that serves as an inspiration not only to each of the Asociacion’s members, but also to other aspiring woman artist.

Pressing the Point - Parallel Expressions in the Graphic Arts of the Chicano and Puerto Rican Movements
Author:
El Museo del Barrio Nueva York with support of the Rockefeller foundation

Summary:

Pressing the Point - Parallel Expressions in the Graphic Arts of the Chicano and Puerto Rican Movements examines affinities between Chicano and Puerto Rican printmakers who participated in popular political struggles in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s. The articulation of a cultural identity became a central focus in both the artistic and social movements, a unifying discourse with which mobilization and political power were achieved. Artists played a pivotal role in constructing those public images and symbols, using posters and prints to communicate in the civic sphere. By pressing their points of view on paper, Chicano and Puerto Rican artists of the 1970s supplied a wealth of ideas on issues related to Latino cultural survival in the United States that are still relevant today.

Beatriz González: What an Honor to be with you at this Historic Moment. Works 1965-1997
Author:
El Museo del Barrio

Summary:

In this century, the artist’s eye is a prism that transforms reality into a many-faceted spectrum of interpretations. This occurs because - in our period as never before- art and political reality have evolved concurrently in such a way that the two could be mistaken for one another.

The art of Beatriz González reflects this concept. We have no choice but to speak of her as an honest, impassioned denizen of our time. Her art is interpretative and, consequently, she now occupies a more than well-deserved place as re-creator of our reality.

Beatriz González deserves the homage and thousand more. Her work has a miraculous capacity for turning creativity into a manner of reprisal, a protest without indoctrination, a message with no proscriptions. She freely interprets and re-invents our milieu. This maestra leaves to the viewer a point of departure to encounter a reality that exists in all of her creation: Colombia

The Veiled Mirrors recent works by Alicia Creus
Author:
El Museo del Barrio

Summary:

Born in La Plata Argentina, in 1939, Alicia Creus began her artistic career as a poet, pursuing a secondary activity -sculpting with clay. In 1977 she left Argentina, which was the governed by a military dictatorship, and moved to New York City where she began to devote more attention to sculpture and less to writing. Her desire to explore color inspired Creus to study painting at the New York School in Greenwich Village. Focusing on this medium, she created large abstract paintings with references to organic shapes, such as seeds, pods, and fruits. However Creus’s art changed radically in the early 1990s, when she began to work on large-scale textile collages, or ‘sewn pictures”, that she has continued to produce until the present.

Carmen Herrera: The Black-and-white-Paintings, 1951-1989
Author:
El Museo del Barrio

Summary:

Carmen Herrera’s art is characterized by radiant planes of color counterposed in sharp, simple and sophisticated geometric compositions. This exhibition, however, comprises only her black-and-white paintings, executed in short sequences of two or three examples from the transitional stages between one chromatic series and the next. Working in black-and-white allows the artist to detach herself from the demands and seduction of color, and so to concentrate on the constructive elements of the image. Each sequence would be finished when she “felt the need for color arising anew”. Executed between 1951 and 1989, these works reflect the development of her visual thinking and represent the ascetic and spiritual essence of her vocabulary

Author:
El Museo del Barrio

Summary:

Exposed in his early years to the community of exiled European Surrealists in the Caribbean, the Puerto Rican born artists first became internationally renowned in the late 1960s for his guerilla art actions in the United States and Europe. His participation in several exhibitions, such as The Museum of Modern Art’s Information, established his reputation within the avant-garde. By the 1970s, his installation and environments included his celebrated maps, faces, kayaks, and tents. In the 1980s he began a series of paintings that directly engaged the visual world of his native Caribbean. He returned to his roots in early 20th-century European modernism by the mid-1990s, often incorporating textual elements and re-engaging the visual as a trigger to the imagination.

Kuenta di tur tempu
Author:
Various

Summary:

This book has a long history. The idea for the book was born in the year 1987. It was the time that Direktiva di Fundashon Instituto Raúl Römer (IRR) meted every Tuesday afternoon in the presence of Mr. Enrique Muller. During one of those meetings the decision was made to adapt and translate some classic tales in our native language Papiamento. Each one of us selected one or two tales. We intended to search for the various well-known translations such as in the Dutch, English, Spanish and French language, so we could present a version in Papiamento. Great was our surprise when during our next meeting our member Mrs. May Henriquez turned up with a completed version of Gingerbread Man, an English tale which in Dutch is called Het Koekemannetje.

The three leading parts are played by a poor childless elderly couple, and a child made of gingerbread. This tale resulted translated in E pòpchi di ehèmber in Papiamento. In the same year, 1987, we published it, as it would take a while before the other tales were ready to be published. In 1990 our foundation published the nine other tales with the title of Kuenta di tur tempu. Today IRR publishes in one volume the ten tales in question and one more, namely of African origin.

Paramaribo SPAN: Contemporary Art in Suriname
Author:
Editors: Thomas Meijer zu Schlochtern and Christopher Cozier

Summary:

Paramaribo SPAN: Contemporary Art in Suriname lets Surinamese artists, writers and international exhibition producers talk about recent work in the visual arts (2000-2010) in Suriname and the lively cultural climate in Paramaribo. ‘Span’ refers in the various languages of Suriname to tension and excitement, as well as to bridging distances and to those who make up a team. In a series of interviews, 27 predominantly young visual artists (17 from Suriname and 10 from Rotterdam) speak about their ideas, working methods and experiences. This creates a picture of the way Surinamese and Dutch artists think about art, the artistic process, their careers and the similarities and differences between them.

The trigger for this richly illustrated publication is the 145th anniversary of De Surinaamsche Bank.

Author:

Summary:

Impressionism
Author:
Editors of Réalités under the direction of Jean Clay

Summary:

Renoir’s “Moulin de la Galette”, Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”, Monet’s “Water Lilies”, Cézanne’s “Mont Ste.-Victoire”, Seurat’s “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” – these modern classics of the painter’s art mean as much to us today as a Madonna by Raphael did to the connoisseur of the Renaissance. They and countless other magnificent canvases, loosely grouped under the designation Impressionist, came out of an extraordinary flowering of easel painting that occurred during the last third of the nineteenth century. They produced a new way of seeing pictures and indeed the world itself. The five just named and hundreds of others are reproduced with stunning authenticity here in IMPRESSIONISM.

MOPA-MOPA: The Millenary Art
Author:
Dorado, Alberto Lopez

Summary:

When the Spanish conquerors invaded the Americas and traveled through the Quillacinga territory, they observed the Indians decorating sticks, plates and pots using the mopa mopa technique. The first report of this art form was made by Hernán Pêrez de Quesada 1543 A.D. The first written reference was dated in 1626 when Simon reported that in Village of Timaná “certain trees yielded little balls of resin that must be picked before they turn into leaves. The Indians collect these balls, turn then into several colors and use them to decorate sticks, ritual masks, tobacco bags, plates, rods and many other wooden items”.

Romanticism
Author:
David Blayney Brown

Summary:

Romanticism was ‘a way of feeling’ rather than a style in art. In the period c.1775-1830, against the background of the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, European artists, together with poets and composers, initiated their own rebellion against the dominant political, religious and social ethos of the day.

In this comprehensive volume, David Blayney Brown takes a thematic approach to Romanticism, relating it to the concurrent, more stylistic movements of the Neoclassicism and the Gothic Revival, and discussing its relationship with the political and social developments of the era.

This book is donated by Nicole Henriquez.

Judy Sund teaches art history at Queens College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York.

Henk Wolvers is a Dutch ceramist, this book is a catalogue of his work in porcelain. From the introduction: "He makes wall objects consisting of rhythmic arrangements of ceramic plates. He creates high vase shapes of paper-thin sheets of clay, in which lines and colours are submerged. Fragile dishes emerge from his hands, which seem to grow into space, because the material still shows soft curves and dents. They have translucent walls, on which someone has, apparently with total casualness, applied marks; tenuous, as if it were the wind spreading the drops of ink dripping from a pen. The shapes undulate and stretch, as if busy finding their definite shapes. There are shapes with scores in their skin, as if the material wants to open itself to the limit. There are shapes with waving ears."

The Netherlands knows Ossip Zadkine (1890-1967) as the designer of the monument dedicated to the second World War in Rotterdam, entitled Verwoeste stad (Destroyed City), which was disveiled in 1953. Zadkine had a substantial oeuvre to his name and was very much appreciated in The Netherlands by sculpture afficionados. Since the twenties he had a special bond with The Netherlands by way of contacts with artists such as Charley Toorop and Hildo Krop. His fame increased thanks to influential private collectors, who purchased his work and exhibited them in museums. Attracted by his reputation many young Dutch sculptors would go to Paris to take classes with the master, such as Wessel Couzijn, Lotti van der Gaag, Hans Ittman, Pearl Perlmuter, Willem Reijers, Shinkichi Tajiri and Jan Wolkers.

On a personal note, the late May Henriquez (former owner of Landhuis Bloemhof) was also a pupil of Zadkine.
